Outgrown the role of “associate” therapist? Afraid to take the leap into private practice?

As therapists, it’s exciting to think about an authentic public image, increased autonomy, and greater income. However, moving from thought to action is where people tend to get anxious: How will I attract new clients? What if I get lonely working alone? Do I have the skills to run my own business? Therapists can stay stuck here for years. And their private practice stays an idea.

Otherside founder, Kev Kokoska (MEd., RCC), has been in private practice since 2015 and is currently exploring the overlap(s) between private and public mental health as part of his PhD studies at UBC. These include:

  • Tailored intervention sets — the importance of therapists melding their therapeutic orientation with their own authentic voice.

  • Brand persona — the public communication of personhood and expertise.

  • Content — the ways to connect therapists with their best-fit clients.

Kev offers group classes that blend private and public practice skills, as well as individual supervision for therapists:

  • Focus: Skill-building – we explore practical ways for new therapists to grow their clinical skills and their private practice.

Structure: Virtual meetings, each including theory and practice components related to a catalog of topics. Examples of clinical skill-building topics include: Working Relationally with Insecure Attachment, Restructuring Defenses, & Transforming Toxic Shame. Examples of private practice topics include: Ethics of Therapist Brand Identity, Creating Ideal Client Personas, & Website Copy 101.

Ideal for: Entrepreneurial-minded new therapists looking to sharpen their clinical skills as they set up a private practice; Therapists with 0-5 years of experience who have recently exited – or are planning to exit – an associate clinician role.

  • Focus: Skill application – we put the attention on your work, specifically. You bring a case conceptualization and/or private practice question and we work together to locate places to apply new skills that align with your clinical and professional goal(s). Then, we practice implementing the skills, ensuring that you leave with clear, actionable next steps.

Structure: Virtual or in-person (Vancouver office), scheduled as needed.

Supplementary Support: For the small sticking points that do not warrant booking a full supervision session, you will have 24/7 peer support access to help keep your work on track.

Ideal for: Therapists interested in a deliberate practice-style of supervision; Therapists who want to develop/grow their public mental health presence.
